Long-Term Running Goals:

I love to run!  I want to feel good and run for a very long time.

Personal:

My husband Brent and I live in Orem with our three kids ages 12, 10 & 7.  Brent is a Marriage and Family Therapist and I'm at home with the kids.  I used to be a CPA, but now I just do a little bookkeeping from home.  For a lot of years running a marathon was something I did to get back in shape after having a baby.  Just finishing was accomplishment enough, now I want to finish faster.

I ran the St. George Marathon in 3:18 when I was 18 and set a record for my age division 15-18.  Now I train with the girl who broke my record.  I love the marathon and half marathon.   Long runs are what keep me from going crazy.

Time to start blogging again. After multiple procedures in the spring I finally got my female problems taken care of. I had an ablation April 28 and haven't bleed since. I think one of the many medications I took screwed me up and I've had a lot of muscle cramps and tightness ever since.

I'm still having a problem where my right leg feels like blood is not circulating to it. I can only run less than a mile before my leg feels weak/exhausted and starts to cramp. My foot tingles and feels like it's falling asleep. I've finally figured out where the tightness is coming from. I have to run 2 miles really slow stopping every half mile to rub and stretch before I can really run.

Ran AF Canyon today with melanie Jane Julie and others. The first two miles was miserable, stopped a lot, was way far behind, and almost turned around at the cave 2 miles in. Then I started feeling pretty good and actually had an ok run. 7 1/2 miles up at average 8:13 pace. Came down 6:23 pace. Average at end 7:17 pace.

I'm running bryce canyon next week. No time goal. I really hope I can just do it without stopping.

4 miles @ 7:10 pace.  My right quad still tightened up and felt like blood wasn't circulating to it very well, but not as bad as before.  I was actually able to run .65 to the stop light, stretch and make it another 1.45 to the drinking fountain before stretching again.  Then I made it home without having it bother me very much, so that is a big improvement.  My right calf is still bothering me though.  I need to work out the tightness in it and my hamstring and behind my knee.  I hope I can get these problems all worked out so I can run Bryce Canyon without stopping.  I don't even have a time goal.  I just want to be able to run 13.1 miles without stopping.

12 miles with Melanie.  I struggles warming up the first 2 miles and had to stop and stretch a few times so my leg wouldn't feel totally dead.  Once I got going I had a good workout though, 15 x 1 min fast and 2 min slow followed by a 3 mile cool down.  We stopped a few times to stretch/drink.  The cool down felt like an extension of my workout though.  I was so tired running between 7:00 and 7:10 pace those last 3 miles.  12 mile average 6:53 pace.  This was probably a "medium" run for Melanie but a really hard run for me.  I just want to go back to bed.  I'm seriously so tired I don't think I can do much of anything until I get a nap.

10 miles up/down Provo Canyon with Melody.  Avg 7:13 pace.  It was so fun to run with Melody again and she's amazing to run that fast only a couple months after having her baby.

Melanie and I drove to Cannonville, UT on Friday afternoon to run the Bryce Canyon 1/2 Marathon on Saturday.  We set up our tent at the KOA around 8:00 p.m. and went to bed at 9:00 p.m.  It was still light outside, but with the help of 3/4 a simply sleep, a mask over my eyes and ear plugs I was able to go to sleep and actually slept better than I usually do before this race.  I also had no expectations of running fast or placing which may have lowered my usual pre-race anxiety level.

We warmed up a mile at the top and I stretched out really well.  I was nervous about the tight spot in my hip, that makes my leg feel exhausted and dead like blood isn't circulating to it, bothering me.  My calf bothered me a little on the warm up and I rubbed behind my knee and stretched that out really well.  Fortunately everything felt pretty good during the race.  The little aches, pains and tight spots were finally in the normal range, a little tightness in my calf that went away, minor hamstring fatigue, and a tight spot in my butt at the end.

I was so happy to feel "healthy" and be able to run without stopping.  I didn't have a time goal because I wasn't sure I was even going to be able to run the thing without feeling horrible and stopping to stretch multiple times.  I got tired and worried I might hit a wall, which kept me from really pushing the pace.  I did stop for about 10 or 15 seconds in mile 9 to drink 2 cups of water, bend over to stretch my  hamstrings and stretch both quads really quick.  This was more because I was just feeling thirsty and tired and less becuse I felt injured.  I've only done a few 15 mile runs in the last 4 months, so distance is more of an issue for me right now than it usually is.

Mile splits: 6:46, 6:45, 6:06, 6:07, 6:22, 6:21, 6:34, 6:35, 6:57 (drink/stretch), 6:36, 6:42, 6:40, 6:27, last .1 @ 6:03 pace.  Overall average 6:32 pace.  This is a downhill course.  I finished feeling great.  About a minute later I realized I wasn't near as tired as I usually am after that race and should have run faster.

I'm so happy to be able to run again!

I thought I wasn't going to be very sore after the race, but I was wrong.  I felt like I strained my leg on Saturday after the race and woke up Sunday morning with sore quads and pain on the inside of my right leg.

On Monday I only ran 2 miles.  I had a nice time walking and visiting with my cousin who is visiting from out of town and staying at my sister's house next door.

I woke up at 5:15 a.m. to meet Melanie for an interval workout and decided that wasn't going to be smart.  I knew if I tried to run fast I would probably pull something.  I went back to bed and ran an easy 4 later.

3 miles.  Still a few tight spots but feeling a lot better.  Hoping to be able to do a "normal" run tomorrow.

Ran suncrest with Melanie.  My quads felt a lot better, but the dead leg feeling in my right leg from the tight spot Ive got came back full force.  I struggled the first two miles and stretched a lot then felt pretty good.  I ran up 4.5 miles and headed back down.  Melanie ran 10 in the time I ran 9.  Then we cooled down 2 miles together.  I wish I would have remembered my watch because I felt like I was going faster than I did on this run a month or so ago.

4 miles.  I dug into the tight spot after my run the day before and it felt irritated.  I never felt good on this run and stopped a lot.  I think the spot was swollen a little which made my leg feel like the circulation was being cut off to it even more.  Took Ibuprofin and iced it before bed.

18 miles down Provo Canyon from Wallsburg with Melanie.  I was so worried I wouldn't even be able to do this run after how bad I felt the day before.  I ran with Melanie until our water stop at mile 2.  I felt like I was limping down the hill to the water because my whole leg ached.  But 2 miles was progress because the day before I didn't even make it 1 before I had to stop.  I took a long time stretching and Melanie headed off running.  I felt a lot better the next 2 miles, but stretched again anyway.  After that my leg felt good and I only stopped at our drinks at mile 6, 10 and 14, and a quick bathroom stop on the side of the road at mile 15.5.  I like having the drinks every 4 miles instead of 3.

At mile 6 I felt my blood sugar drop and realized I didn't eat enough the day before and should have had some breakfast.  I took a gu and kept going.  I felt pretty bad at mile 8 but kept going.  I could run 8 miles mostly uphill to the car or 10 miles mostly downhill to the other car and downhill sounded better.  We left more drinks at mile 14.  I drank a whole 16 oz full strength gatorade and 1/2 a water bottle.  I felt like I was going to vomit for about a 1/2 mile but after that I felt a lot better.  My legs just got really tired because that was far for me.  I stretched and drove down the road to pick up Melanie who was running 21.  My average pace was 6:56.

14 miles.  Melanie, Melody and I ran 4 miles up Provo Canyon for a warm-up.  Melody headed back and Melanie and I started intervals down the canyon, .62 down fast then .38 back up for recovery.  The first two were through the hilly nun's park area.  We started our third one after the Nun's park hill and ran the next 4 along the stretch through Canyon Glen Park and down a little ways from that.  My paces for the fast part was 6:04, 6:04, 5:56, 5:55, 5:56, 6:08.  I started the last one way too fast and didn't feel good.  I didn't look at my watch while I ran these.  Next time I'll look at the watch and set a goal.  We ran a 4 mile cooldown.  I was so tired I just wanted to go back to bed after this.  I took a nap in the afternoon.

Went to the 10k in Spanish Fork.  Warmed up 2 miles with Melanie and part with Jen.  I ran the 10k in 42:32, 6:55 pace.  I really didn't want to feel like I felt after Tuesday's run, totally wiped out and like I can't do anything else all day, because I had a lot of family things planned and I wanted to enjoy doing them.  Melanie and I cooled down 3 miles together.  I felt good all day so that was nice.

4 miles.  I realized while I ran today that I feel "less bad" doing it.  To say I'm "feeling better" sounds like I am better, when "less bad" more propperly describes how I feel.  My tight spot isn't quite as tight and I didn't have to stop as often or feel as horrible before I stopped to stretch.  I think some time in the next couple of weeks I'll be able to say I feel "good."

20 miles.  Met Melody and Melanie at AF High School and drove to AF Canyon.  I struggled the first 2 miles with my hip/dead leg feeling and stopped to stretch at .75, 1.5 and again at the Timp Cave drinking fountain at 2.25.  After that I was warmed up enough to just run.  I think it's harder for me to feel good warming up going uphill with this particular problem.

I turned around when I saw Melanie coming down, about a 1/2 mile earlier than I planned.  I was able to stay relatively close to her for about 8 miles until I needed to make a bathroom stop along the trail through the golf course.  Melody ended where we started at the Canyon and Melanie and I ran down to AF High School.  I had to add on .75 around the block at the end to get my 20.

I wish I acurately clocked my pace.  I  messed up my watch twice, leaving it running when I stopped and  the stopping it when I started running.  My best guess is an average 7:10 pace.

14 miles with Melanie along Jordan River parkway.  We warmed up 2 miles then started 15 x 1 min fast, 2 min recovery.  The almost 6 mile cool down was a killer.  I was so tired by the end.  We did this workout the Tuesday before Bryce Canyon and my times were actually faster then.  It seems like I should be faster today.  I was much more rested the last time though. Average 6:58 pace.

18 miles.  Met Melanie and Melody.  We started at Bridal Veil falls and ran up South Fork 6 miles.  I was slow going up South Fork, avg 7:54 pace.  I rest my watch before starting down.  My average down for 12 miles ending at Will's Pit Stop was 6:44 pace.  I'm feeling better about the distance.  I didn't feel near as bad finishing up this run as I did on my 18 mile run two weeks ago.  Maybe 7:07 average.  I took a nap and felt pretty good all day.
