Long-Term Running Goals:

I love to run!  I want to feel good and run for a very long time.

Personal:

My husband Brent and I live in Orem with our three kids ages 12, 10 & 7.  Brent is a Marriage and Family Therapist and I'm at home with the kids.  I used to be a CPA, but now I just do a little bookkeeping from home.  For a lot of years running a marathon was something I did to get back in shape after having a baby.  Just finishing was accomplishment enough, now I want to finish faster.

I ran the St. George Marathon in 3:18 when I was 18 and set a record for my age division 15-18.  Now I train with the girl who broke my record.  I love the marathon and half marathon.   Long runs are what keep me from going crazy.

Time to start blogging again.  I took most of October off after the marathon to recover.  I had terrible issues with muscle cramps, the same problem I had last spring.  I realized it was brought on by a medication I took for my sinuses in February and again right before the marathon.  Worked through that then was sick for a month in December/January.  I'm finally feeling better and think I might be able to really train again.  I hope this year is better than last year.  It's not starting well, but last year was so bad that this year is bound to be better.

Melanie and I ran 8 miles outside in about 20 degrees.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it might be.  I ran about a 7:08 average pace.  Then we hit the treadmils at Gold's Gym.  I did 7 x 1 mile @ 6:15 pace with 55 sec standing recovery between.  I woke up so tired and felt like I was just on autopilot.

This next part will either be funny or too much information for some people:  When I came in from my 8 miles outside and took my long  pants off I saw I had blood on my light blue shorts.  I thought, "I'm not going to quit my run because I'm bleeding.  I ran down the canyon last summer with blood all over these same shorts and that turned out fine."  So I hopped on the treadmill and started running.  Two ladies came up to me at different times to tell me I had a problem.  It wasn't until a mile or so after the first lady came up to me that I realized I had another pair of shorts in my bag I could have put on, on well.  By that time I only had a few miles left and didn't want to ruin my intervals with minimal rest to change my shorts.  This is why black shorts are best.

18 miles.  Melanie was gone to a race so I asked Marie to run 10 miles with me.  She's the only person I know who can regularly run 8 min miles for months and still be able to bust out a 10 mile run at 7 min pace.  We ran a hilly route from my house out past Timp View High School and back.  avg 7:06 pace.  I think I was more tired than she was.  Brent came on his bike with me for 8 more.  Avg at end of run 7:08 pace.  Was discouraged to be so tired running so slow.  Right now I can't imagine running a sub 3 at the Salt Lake City Marathon on April 19th.  I need to just enjoy that I can run at all and be happy with whatever I get. I just want to finish feeling good, haven't done that in a while, the only marathon I did last year was a disaster.  Hoping for more fun this year.

~~Saturday morning I ran 20 miles.  Melanie and I met at Gold’s Gym on 800 North in Orem to run up/down Provo Canyon.  Marie and Dessiree came with us for the first 5 miles.  I felt so tired right from the start.  Melanie got way ahead of me and I caught up to her on the water stops.  We went on the trail until just before Bridal Veil.  Then there were signs saying avalanche control was using explosives in the next 24 hours and the trail was closed.  We went out on the highway and up into South Fork.  When we got to Vivian Park there were several highway patrol cars and officers heading down the trail.  We ran up South Fork, but not quite as far as we planned.  It started to snow and became very cold.
When I got back to our drinks at Vivian Melanie was ready to start running again.  I told her to go ahead and that I wanted to stretch.  She took off down the highway and I stretched for a couple of minutes.  As I got out to the highway a man my and “Incident Management” truck across the street yelled to me and said, “You can’t run down there, we’re shutting down the highway to bomb the mountain.”  I could see cars still coming up and knew I would be stuck there for a long time if I stopped so I said, “I’ll hurry,” and took off running.
About a ½ mile later a highway patrol car pulled up next to me and the patrol man said, “I need to drive you down the highway about a mile.  We’ve got explosives all ready to bomb the mountain and we’re shutting down the highway.”  I got in the car and mentioned my friend was running up ahead.  He said she was in the other patrol car.  They dropped us off at the turnoff to Bridal Veil.  We continued down the canyon on the trail to the gym.  I felt so tired.  I had a hard time running as fast as I thought I should.  We finished up on the treadmills at the gym.  Melanie did 22 miles and I quit at 20.

Melanie and I ran Suncrest.  I felt even worse doing it than I did the week before and didn't even go all the way to the top.  Avg 7:38 pace.

I started having female problems in November, spotting between my periods quite a bit.  In January it got worse and towards the end of February I realized I had been bleeding mostly like a regular period for over a month.  I scheduled an apointment to take my IUD out hoping that would help, but had to wait almost two weeks to get that done.

Got the IUD out this day.  Unfortunately it didn't stop my bleeding, it only made it worse.

This was the day I realized something was really wrong with me!

~Melanie, Kim and I met at Gold’s Gym to run up by the temple and over along the Murdock trail south until we hit 10 miles and back to the gym.  My legs felt even more tired than the week before right from the start.  I kept falling behind and catching up at the stops.  Finally after about 7 miles I said, “Something is wrong with me.”  Melanie said something about me bleeding so much and Kim suggested I might have low iron.  I had wondered if the bleeding was an issue, but hadn’t thought about taking iron supplements.  I struggled on my way back to the gym.  It felt like the end of a horrible marathon.  I stopped every two miles for a while and went into a bathroom to change my tampon because I was bleeding through it and all over my pants that were fortunately black.  Soon I was stopping every mile and I walked a little at mile 17 and felt like I was going to cry.  Then I decided to just finish and ran to mile 19 before deciding to quit.  I started to walk the last mile, but it was taking too long so I ran another ½ mile to the gym.

I woke up feeling dizzy and horrible.  I had been bleeding a lot since Friday.  I counted the tampons left in the box, having had to purchase more on Sunday morning.  I soaked and bleed through 20 in 24 hours.

Called the nurse and she said to go to the emergency room.  I asked what they would do there, saying that would cost me a lot of money.  She insisted I should go.  I wanted to just go into the office to see the doctor.  Realizing that was the only way to get help I spent 2 hours there for the doctor there to talk to my doctor and send me home saying it's typical to bleed a lot after an IUD removal and to keep my apointment in two weeks.  I was mad.

~~Thursday morning I met Melanie to run Suncrest.  I was bleeding though my tampon before I even started running and changed it by the dumpster.  I started out with her and stopped after .25 miles.  I told her not to wait for me and that I didn’t know how far I would go.  She went ahead and I kept going.  I stopped at 1.5 miles and started to cry.  I felt so horrible and was going so slow.  When I hit the real hilly part I was doing an 11 min mile.  I turned around at 2 miles and headed down.  Even coming down I felt like I needed to stop for breaks.  I ran an average 8:50 pace for 4 miles and felt horrible.  I drove home and felt myself bleeding out all over the place.  I sat on a hat so I wouldn’t get blood on the seat.
When I got home big clots of blood were dripping out of me into the toilet.  I showered and got the kids off to school.  I called the doctor’s office and cried on the phone to the receptionist and nurse, telling them how much I was bleeding and that I felt horrible and couldn’t wait two weeks to see the doctor.  The nurse told me to come in at 9:30 a.m.
I saw Dr. McCarter and he said I was hemorrhaging and suggested a D&C to clean out my uterus and restart my cycle.  I got that scheduled for the next morning.  I felt like he should have done that for me on Monday, but was too exhausted to get upset.

Brent took me to the Orem Community Hospital at 8:15 a.m. to prepare for the surgery.
I initially planned to have a spinal block because I don’t like having general anesthesia.  I always have a sore throat from the tube they put down my throat and usually end up feeling sick to my stomach afterwards.  I also thought it might be interesting to watch the procedure on the screen.  I spent about 30 minutes talking to Dr. Brown, the anesthesiologist about it.  He convinced me he could put me under with general anesthesia and wake me up quickly without putting a tube down my throat.  He said I would be out of the hospital a lot faster than with the spinal block and since they literally charge by the minute I went for that.  He said he wouldn't put a tube down my throat and if I had problems he would get down on his knees and beg my forgiveness.
I convinced him to give me the least amount of everything possible and told the nurse I would rather deal with a little pain than all the problems pain medications seem to cause me, high blood pressure, heart racing, nausea, etc.  When I had my nasal passage surgery a year ago I was feeling ok until they gave me medication for pain.  Then I needed three of four other medications to deal with the side effects of the pain medication and I went home so doped up on stuff I felt horrible.
When the nurse anesthetist came in he said he was going to give me some medication before we went into the operating room.  I said I didn’t want it and asked exactly what it was for.  He said it was to calm me down.  I said, “I don’t want it.  I want the least medication possible.”  I had just had a 30 minute conversation about how I wanted the least medication possible with the anesthesiologist.  I calmly told him I would be fine.
They wheeled me down to the operating room and I got on the table.  The nurse put the mask on my face first with oxygen and then something to put me to sleep.  The next thing I knew I was back in the room I started in and Brent was sitting on the chair next to me.
The anesthesiologist came in a few minutes later and asked if he needed to beg my forgiveness.  I said I felt great.  He brought me straight to the room I started in instead of the recovery room clearly to save me money.  I thought that was nice.  It also shows that it sometimes pays to ask about the cost.  Then Dr. McCarter came in and showed me pictures of my uterus.  He said I had a lot of tissue and blood vessels built up in there probably because of the IUD.  He thought the procedure would fix my problem.  They were sending the tissue to the lab to be tested to make sure there wasn’t anything serious though.  We signed our discharge papers at 10:55 a.m. and left a few minutes later.
I talked to Melanie in the hospital shortly after the surgery, as soon as I felt with it enough to carry on a conversation.  We talked for a few minutes and then I called her again after I got home.  Melanie said, “You need to tell them to give you something to fix your blood.  Tell them you’re a marathon runner and you have a race in a month.”  I was thinking, “I don’t know that I’ll be running the race in a month,” but didn’t tell her that.
I was surprised I wasn’t sore after the surgery and also that my bleeding stopped so quickly.  I was spotting a little when I left the hospital but by 2:30 p.m. even that stopped.  It was nice to be able to tell the kids I was fixed and not bleeding anymore.  I was so glad to be on the road to recovery instead of feeling like I was slowly bleeding to death!

Time to start blogging again. After multiple procedures in the spring I finally got my female problems taken care of. I had an ablation April 28 and haven't bleed since. I think one of the many medications I took screwed me up and I've had a lot of muscle cramps and tightness ever since.

I'm still having a problem where my right leg feels like blood is not circulating to it. I can only run less than a mile before my leg feels weak/exhausted and starts to cramp. My foot tingles and feels like it's falling asleep. I've finally figured out where the tightness is coming from. I have to run 2 miles really slow stopping every half mile to rub and stretch before I can really run.

Ran AF Canyon today with melanie Jane Julie and others. The first two miles was miserable, stopped a lot, was way far behind, and almost turned around at the cave 2 miles in. Then I started feeling pretty good and actually had an ok run. 7 1/2 miles up at average 8:13 pace. Came down 6:23 pace. Average at end 7:17 pace.

I'm running bryce canyon next week. No time goal. I really hope I can just do it without stopping.

4 miles @ 7:10 pace.  My right quad still tightened up and felt like blood wasn't circulating to it very well, but not as bad as before.  I was actually able to run .65 to the stop light, stretch and make it another 1.45 to the drinking fountain before stretching again.  Then I made it home without having it bother me very much, so that is a big improvement.  My right calf is still bothering me though.  I need to work out the tightness in it and my hamstring and behind my knee.  I hope I can get these problems all worked out so I can run Bryce Canyon without stopping.  I don't even have a time goal.  I just want to be able to run 13.1 miles without stopping.

12 miles with Melanie.  I struggles warming up the first 2 miles and had to stop and stretch a few times so my leg wouldn't feel totally dead.  Once I got going I had a good workout though, 15 x 1 min fast and 2 min slow followed by a 3 mile cool down.  We stopped a few times to stretch/drink.  The cool down felt like an extension of my workout though.  I was so tired running between 7:00 and 7:10 pace those last 3 miles.  12 mile average 6:53 pace.  This was probably a "medium" run for Melanie but a really hard run for me.  I just want to go back to bed.  I'm seriously so tired I don't think I can do much of anything until I get a nap.

Melanie and I drove to Cannonville, UT on Friday afternoon to run the Bryce Canyon 1/2 Marathon on Saturday.  We set up our tent at the KOA around 8:00 p.m. and went to bed at 9:00 p.m.  It was still light outside, but with the help of 3/4 a simply sleep, a mask over my eyes and ear plugs I was able to go to sleep and actually slept better than I usually do before this race.  I also had no expectations of running fast or placing which may have lowered my usual pre-race anxiety level.

We warmed up a mile at the top and I stretched out really well.  I was nervous about the tight spot in my hip, that makes my leg feel exhausted and dead like blood isn't circulating to it, bothering me.  My calf bothered me a little on the warm up and I rubbed behind my knee and stretched that out really well.  Fortunately everything felt pretty good during the race.  The little aches, pains and tight spots were finally in the normal range, a little tightness in my calf that went away, minor hamstring fatigue, and a tight spot in my butt at the end.

I was so happy to feel "healthy" and be able to run without stopping.  I didn't have a time goal because I wasn't sure I was even going to be able to run the thing without feeling horrible and stopping to stretch multiple times.  I got tired and worried I might hit a wall, which kept me from really pushing the pace.  I did stop for about 10 or 15 seconds in mile 9 to drink 2 cups of water, bend over to stretch my  hamstrings and stretch both quads really quick.  This was more because I was just feeling thirsty and tired and less becuse I felt injured.  I've only done a few 15 mile runs in the last 4 months, so distance is more of an issue for me right now than it usually is.

Mile splits: 6:46, 6:45, 6:06, 6:07, 6:22, 6:21, 6:34, 6:35, 6:57 (drink/stretch), 6:36, 6:42, 6:40, 6:27, last .1 @ 6:03 pace.  Overall average 6:32 pace.  This is a downhill course.  I finished feeling great.  About a minute later I realized I wasn't near as tired as I usually am after that race and should have run faster.

I'm so happy to be able to run again!

I thought I wasn't going to be very sore after the race, but I was wrong.  I felt like I strained my leg on Saturday after the race and woke up Sunday morning with sore quads and pain on the inside of my right leg.

On Monday I only ran 2 miles.  I had a nice time walking and visiting with my cousin who is visiting from out of town and staying at my sister's house next door.

I woke up at 5:15 a.m. to meet Melanie for an interval workout and decided that wasn't going to be smart.  I knew if I tried to run fast I would probably pull something.  I went back to bed and ran an easy 4 later.

Ran suncrest with Melanie.  My quads felt a lot better, but the dead leg feeling in my right leg from the tight spot Ive got came back full force.  I struggled the first two miles and stretched a lot then felt pretty good.  I ran up 4.5 miles and headed back down.  Melanie ran 10 in the time I ran 9.  Then we cooled down 2 miles together.  I wish I would have remembered my watch because I felt like I was going faster than I did on this run a month or so ago.

4 miles.  I dug into the tight spot after my run the day before and it felt irritated.  I never felt good on this run and stopped a lot.  I think the spot was swollen a little which made my leg feel like the circulation was being cut off to it even more.  Took Ibuprofin and iced it before bed.

40 is just an age! Our bodies shouldn't magically fall apart right when we hit that age! Geez!

I thought 40 was bad, 41 has been even worse. Watch out come December Burt.

18 miles down Provo Canyon from Wallsburg with Melanie.  I was so worried I wouldn't even be able to do this run after how bad I felt the day before.  I ran with Melanie until our water stop at mile 2.  I felt like I was limping down the hill to the water because my whole leg ached.  But 2 miles was progress because the day before I didn't even make it 1 before I had to stop.  I took a long time stretching and Melanie headed off running.  I felt a lot better the next 2 miles, but stretched again anyway.  After that my leg felt good and I only stopped at our drinks at mile 6, 10 and 14, and a quick bathroom stop on the side of the road at mile 15.5.  I like having the drinks every 4 miles instead of 3.

At mile 6 I felt my blood sugar drop and realized I didn't eat enough the day before and should have had some breakfast.  I took a gu and kept going.  I felt pretty bad at mile 8 but kept going.  I could run 8 miles mostly uphill to the car or 10 miles mostly downhill to the other car and downhill sounded better.  We left more drinks at mile 14.  I drank a whole 16 oz full strength gatorade and 1/2 a water bottle.  I felt like I was going to vomit for about a 1/2 mile but after that I felt a lot better.  My legs just got really tired because that was far for me.  I stretched and drove down the road to pick up Melanie who was running 21.  My average pace was 6:56.

14 miles.  Melanie, Melody and I ran 4 miles up Provo Canyon for a warm-up.  Melody headed back and Melanie and I started intervals down the canyon, .62 down fast then .38 back up for recovery.  The first two were through the hilly nun's park area.  We started our third one after the Nun's park hill and ran the next 4 along the stretch through Canyon Glen Park and down a little ways from that.  My paces for the fast part was 6:04, 6:04, 5:56, 5:55, 5:56, 6:08.  I started the last one way too fast and didn't feel good.  I didn't look at my watch while I ran these.  Next time I'll look at the watch and set a goal.  We ran a 4 mile cooldown.  I was so tired I just wanted to go back to bed after this.  I took a nap in the afternoon.

Went to the 10k in Spanish Fork.  Warmed up 2 miles with Melanie and part with Jen.  I ran the 10k in 42:32, 6:55 pace.  I really didn't want to feel like I felt after Tuesday's run, totally wiped out and like I can't do anything else all day, because I had a lot of family things planned and I wanted to enjoy doing them.  Melanie and I cooled down 3 miles together.  I felt good all day so that was nice.

4 miles.  I realized while I ran today that I feel "less bad" doing it.  To say I'm "feeling better" sounds like I am better, when "less bad" more propperly describes how I feel.  My tight spot isn't quite as tight and I didn't have to stop as often or feel as horrible before I stopped to stretch.  I think some time in the next couple of weeks I'll be able to say I feel "good."

20 miles.  Met Melody and Melanie at AF High School and drove to AF Canyon.  I struggled the first 2 miles with my hip/dead leg feeling and stopped to stretch at .75, 1.5 and again at the Timp Cave drinking fountain at 2.25.  After that I was warmed up enough to just run.  I think it's harder for me to feel good warming up going uphill with this particular problem.

I turned around when I saw Melanie coming down, about a 1/2 mile earlier than I planned.  I was able to stay relatively close to her for about 8 miles until I needed to make a bathroom stop along the trail through the golf course.  Melody ended where we started at the Canyon and Melanie and I ran down to AF High School.  I had to add on .75 around the block at the end to get my 20.

I wish I acurately clocked my pace.  I  messed up my watch twice, leaving it running when I stopped and  the stopping it when I started running.  My best guess is an average 7:10 pace.

We actually did have really good talks. My sister and brother-in-law moved into our ward and spoke on a conference talk by Elder Cook I think. Where he talked about this life being like an athlete's 4 min performance that will determine our eternal future, etc. Yea, that must be it.

From julieesplin on Mon, Jul 28, 2014 at 13:55:13 from 71.36.78.215

Almost, we had 3 of 6 and now there's 4. They are staying in my mom's basement apartment until they decide where to live. There is one empty lot and my other sister, who also used to live in AZ, is moving here soon. She want's to build on the lot, but we'll see. Her husband needs to find a new job first. He just got out of the air force. I have another sister in Oregon who will never move here. She has a 10 acre horse property there and loves Oregon.

I'm sure we could find a nice home in the ward for you to move into Burt. Didn't you just move?

14 miles with Melanie along Jordan River parkway.  We warmed up 2 miles then started 15 x 1 min fast, 2 min recovery.  The almost 6 mile cool down was a killer.  I was so tired by the end.  We did this workout the Tuesday before Bryce Canyon and my times were actually faster then.  It seems like I should be faster today.  I was much more rested the last time though. Average 6:58 pace.

I feel like I'm having a hard time pushing myself.  I get going and just like to be comfortable.  I really need to snap out of it.

On the bright side, there wasn't much competition so my 6:53 pace allowed me to win the race and bring home $100.  My kids and husband all did the race.  We got entries from Brent's work.  We won several gift certificates in the drawing and had a fun time there together.

12 miles.  Met Melanie at Will's Pit Stop 2 miles from the canyon and ran 2+ miles to the BYU track for a speed workout.  I was encouraged that my leg felt good the whole first mile of the warm up and I didn't have to stretch until 1.25 miles and I made it another mile to the track just fine.

We ran 8 x 800 meters with 400 meter recovery.  We also stopped and stood there, walking around for about 30 sec after each one before the 400 meter jog.  1st felt terrible 2:59, 2nd felt even worse as my leg ached 2:59 and I felt like I was going to throw up too.  3rd less aching leg but still felt like I was going to throw up 3:00.  4th wasn't as bad and I pulled out another 2:59, 5th I actually felt better than #2 and #3, 2:58, 5th I felt like I was finally in a rhythm 2:59, 6th feeling the same 2:59, 7th another 2:59, and 8th another 2:59.

As we finished the workout Melanie said she hates the track.  I said, "Now you know how I feel about Suncrest.  I think you feel about the track the way I feel about Suncrest."

I had Josse work on me Monday and I think it really helped.  She dug into my abdomen and up by my ribs.  I didn't realize I was so tight all through there.  I actually felt much better on the cool-down back to the car than I have all year.  I noticed the sharp pain I've had in my stomach muscles whenever I couch was gone.  I've had that all summer, ever since my surgery in April.

I didn't really think about our pace and we had an average 7:22 pace when we turned around at Vivian Park.  We ran into some other people there and visited for a few minutes.  Coming down we must have averaged 6:37 pace.  I was so surprised when I looked at my watch as we were finishing and saw an average 6:59 pace for the run.  All year I have struggled and felt horrible doing 7:15 pace so it was wonderful to feel pretty good doing 7's.

I really wanted one more longer run.  I still had a little of the "dead leg" think going on and had to stop to stretch in the first mile but after that I felt pretty good.  I had a 7:23 pace when I turned around a couple miles up South Fork.  I was pushing the pace coming down to try to get my pace under 7 min and barely did, 6:59 average.  I was just happy I actually felt like I could push the pace.  All year long I've felt like my body wouldn't allow me to really push myself because everything felt so tight and just not right.

3 miles.  I didn't stretch before and had the dead leg thing after only 1/2 mile.  This didn't give me a lot of confidence to be able to run 26 miles without stopping on Saturday.

I went to a chiropractor to have my ankle adjusted the day before and when he yanked on my ankle it felt like he pulled my hips off.  I lay down on the floor the night before and asked my boys if my legs looked the same length.  They said one, the one he yanked on, looked a centimeter longer.  I had them yank on my other leg to even them out.  My 11 and 13 year old boys yanked several times to get them the same.

They still felt off to me on my run so I asked my husband and it said that same one still looked longer.  I had him yank on the other one and that seemed to fix my problems.  I spent some time rubbing things out to get ready for the race.

St. George Marathon 2:56:51, my second fastest time!

I was extreemely pleased with my race after the terrible year I had.  I never felt good after my ablation at the end of April.  The medications or the procecure or something made me feel tight all over and I struggled with it all summer.  I felt like my body just wouldn't allow me to really push myself in a workout and I couldn't figure out what it was.
It was discouraging to feel so bad going so slow all the time.

It was only in the last 2 weeks or so that I had a significant improvement in how I felt.  Josse helped me a lot with that.  She's an excellent massage therapist.  I thought if I could warm-up a bit and stretch really good before the race that I had a good chance of feeling ok and doing well.

I printed a band on an old bib number with mile splits for a 2:58:30 and planned to follow that.  I figured if my watch was off by a little on the distance this would give me a min or so to make that up.  My husband gave me a look like I was crazy when he saw this spreadsheet pulled up on the computer and I told him my plan.

I followed the mile splits pretty well the first part of the race.  A few of my downhill miles were a little faster, but my uphill miles were slower.  Somewhere in the first 5 miles I felt like I needed to go to the bathroom.  I knew it was mostly gas.  I felt gassy after I ate at the expo.  I'm never eating there again.  It made me feel the same way last year.  I figured stopping to poop a little might just get things moving more and decided not to stop.  The feeling went away for several miles, but returned again, went away again etc.  I didn't get my water bottles in on time so I was at the mercy of the cups.  I drank at every stop.

Mile 11 is always the worst for me.  I looked down at my watch about 1/2 way through it and my pace was 20 seconds slower than it was supposed to be.  I sped up some to get it over with but still finished it slower than I should have been.  As I approached the 13th mile marker I felt like I needed to poop again and this time it was really bad.  I looked over at the line of port-o-potties longingly and just kept running.  About a quarter mile later I felt ok again.

When I crossed the clock at the 1/2 way point I saw 1:30:50 and worried I wasn't going to reach my goal of breaking 3 hours.  I remembered crossing the 1/2 in just over 1:30 the year I ran 2:58 and I was slower and less confident in my training this year.

Miles 15 and 16 are my favorite miles, so pretty and fast.  My husband, Brent, met me on his bike at about mile 16.  He rode out to give me a water bottle then went back on the running trail.  He dropped my water bottles for the last two Elite stops which was nice.  He went ahead to video me several times so I saw him off and on.  I felt pretty good on miles 15 to 20 with the occasional feeling like I needed to poop.  I tried to follow the splits on my band I printed, but they were almost all faster through this section.  In mile 19 my legs started to feel tired, going up the hill, and I worried I might fall to pieces.  But when I hit the downhill again I felt good again.  My splits were right on again for a few miles.

When I hit mile 23 I took my last of 6 GU and drank then decided to not drink any more.  I was so sick of feeling like I had to go to the bathroom and the feeling seemed to return whenever I ate my GU or drank.  A min or so later I felt good again.

At mile 24 Brent told me to catch the two girls ahead of me.  I looked up and couldn't see any women.  Then a 1/2 mile later he told me the two girls looked like they might be master division women.  I said, "Don't do that to me!"  I hate feeling like I'm racing against other people on a marathon.  I just like to race the clock and see what I can do.  I really don't like to be near other women at the finish.  It stresses me out, so I was glad I couldn't see them.  I did pass one of the women, but not the other.

I was so pleased that I actually felt good all the way to the end.  When I saw the clock at mile 25.2 turning 2:50 I realized I might finish with a 2:56 if I was able to keep up the pace I was doing.  I felt good and I only had one mile.

As I turned the corner to the finish line I thought about how I felt turning that corner last year, miserable and cramping, stopping to walk with the finish line in sight.  I felt extremely grateful to be feeling good.  Something I haven't felt much for an entire year.  What a blessing it was to feel good on the day of a race.  I said so many prayers of thanks during this race.

When I crossed the finish line I cried, tears of gratitude and joy.  I had an experience earlier in the year where I felt like I would be "ok."  That I wouldn't "win," but I would have "some success this year."  All summer long I thought about that experience and just couldn't see how it was going to happen, but it happened.  I was so happy to just feel good.

I gave Brent a big hug.  He was so supportive of me all year, even when he thought I was crazy for planning to break 3 hours.  He kept that to himself and didn't tell me until after the race.

I felt really happy and good about my race until I saw the results.  The other woman my husband told me to pass that I didn't catch was the masters division winner and she finished only 45 seconds ahead of me.  Huge prize for the masters winner.  Trying not to feel ungrateful I couldn't help but groan "45 seconds" three or four times in the few hours after the race to which Brent finally said, "Stop with the 45 seconds!"

Mile splits 6:58, 7:02, 6:35, 6:36, 6:34, 6:26, 6:31, 7:43 (veyo), 7:12, 7:06, 7:28(mile 11), 7:01, 6:40 (1/2 way), 6:39, 6:20, 6:10, 6:28, 6:30, 6:59, 6:44, 6:24, 6:42, 6:34, 6:35, 6:41, 6:37, 6:29 (last .2).  Average 6:45 pace. Official first half 1:30:47 (6:56 pace), second half 1:26:04 (6:34 pace).

Congratulations on a very strong race! You ran well and pushed hard.

I, too, dislike mile 11 most of all and hate my split on that mile. Ugh!

Great job, Julie! Sorry it took me so long to comment. You said poop three times. Tell Bishop Esplin that he needs to work on his gift of discernment. You're not crazy!!
