Long-Term Running Goals:

I love to run!  I want to feel good and run for a very long time.

Personal:

My husband Brent and I live in Orem with our three kids ages 12, 10 & 7.  Brent is a Marriage and Family Therapist and I'm at home with the kids.  I used to be a CPA, but now I just do a little bookkeeping from home.  For a lot of years running a marathon was something I did to get back in shape after having a baby.  Just finishing was accomplishment enough, now I want to finish faster.

I ran the St. George Marathon in 3:18 when I was 18 and set a record for my age division 15-18.  Now I train with the girl who broke my record.  I love the marathon and half marathon.   Long runs are what keep me from going crazy.

4 miles @ 7:10 pace.  My right quad still tightened up and felt like blood wasn't circulating to it very well, but not as bad as before.  I was actually able to run .65 to the stop light, stretch and make it another 1.45 to the drinking fountain before stretching again.  Then I made it home without having it bother me very much, so that is a big improvement.  My right calf is still bothering me though.  I need to work out the tightness in it and my hamstring and behind my knee.  I hope I can get these problems all worked out so I can run Bryce Canyon without stopping.  I don't even have a time goal.  I just want to be able to run 13.1 miles without stopping.

12 miles with Melanie.  I struggles warming up the first 2 miles and had to stop and stretch a few times so my leg wouldn't feel totally dead.  Once I got going I had a good workout though, 15 x 1 min fast and 2 min slow followed by a 3 mile cool down.  We stopped a few times to stretch/drink.  The cool down felt like an extension of my workout though.  I was so tired running between 7:00 and 7:10 pace those last 3 miles.  12 mile average 6:53 pace.  This was probably a "medium" run for Melanie but a really hard run for me.  I just want to go back to bed.  I'm seriously so tired I don't think I can do much of anything until I get a nap.

10 miles up/down Provo Canyon with Melody.  Avg 7:13 pace.  It was so fun to run with Melody again and she's amazing to run that fast only a couple months after having her baby.

Melanie and I drove to Cannonville, UT on Friday afternoon to run the Bryce Canyon 1/2 Marathon on Saturday.  We set up our tent at the KOA around 8:00 p.m. and went to bed at 9:00 p.m.  It was still light outside, but with the help of 3/4 a simply sleep, a mask over my eyes and ear plugs I was able to go to sleep and actually slept better than I usually do before this race.  I also had no expectations of running fast or placing which may have lowered my usual pre-race anxiety level.

We warmed up a mile at the top and I stretched out really well.  I was nervous about the tight spot in my hip, that makes my leg feel exhausted and dead like blood isn't circulating to it, bothering me.  My calf bothered me a little on the warm up and I rubbed behind my knee and stretched that out really well.  Fortunately everything felt pretty good during the race.  The little aches, pains and tight spots were finally in the normal range, a little tightness in my calf that went away, minor hamstring fatigue, and a tight spot in my butt at the end.

I was so happy to feel "healthy" and be able to run without stopping.  I didn't have a time goal because I wasn't sure I was even going to be able to run the thing without feeling horrible and stopping to stretch multiple times.  I got tired and worried I might hit a wall, which kept me from really pushing the pace.  I did stop for about 10 or 15 seconds in mile 9 to drink 2 cups of water, bend over to stretch my  hamstrings and stretch both quads really quick.  This was more because I was just feeling thirsty and tired and less becuse I felt injured.  I've only done a few 15 mile runs in the last 4 months, so distance is more of an issue for me right now than it usually is.

Mile splits: 6:46, 6:45, 6:06, 6:07, 6:22, 6:21, 6:34, 6:35, 6:57 (drink/stretch), 6:36, 6:42, 6:40, 6:27, last .1 @ 6:03 pace.  Overall average 6:32 pace.  This is a downhill course.  I finished feeling great.  About a minute later I realized I wasn't near as tired as I usually am after that race and should have run faster.

I'm so happy to be able to run again!
