Long-Term Running Goals:

I love to run!  I want to feel good and run for a very long time.

Personal:

My husband Brent and I live in Orem with our three kids ages 12, 10 & 7.  Brent is a Marriage and Family Therapist and I'm at home with the kids.  I used to be a CPA, but now I just do a little bookkeeping from home.  For a lot of years running a marathon was something I did to get back in shape after having a baby.  Just finishing was accomplishment enough, now I want to finish faster.

I ran the St. George Marathon in 3:18 when I was 18 and set a record for my age division 15-18.  Now I train with the girl who broke my record.  I love the marathon and half marathon.   Long runs are what keep me from going crazy.

14 miles up/down Provo Canyon with Melanie, Kim, Emily and Melody.  About a mile from Vivian Park, our turn-around spot, we realized we had a sub 7 min pace going UP the canyon! Never done that before.  Stopped to stretch and turn around then quickly realized we were running up with a nice tail wind.  Our first couple of miles back were pretty windy, then it died down.  Avg up 6:58, avg down 6:34 pace, overall avg 6:46 pace.  I've done some out/back 10 milers in the 6:40's but never 14 before.  Felt good, but tired at the end.  Then we iced in the river.  It wasn't too bad.  Emily only lasted with her feet in for about 1 min.  They were bare.  The rest of us stayed in for about 4 min.  The key to icing "comfortably" is wearing socks.

10 miles with Melanie and Melody in Provo Canyon. Started @ Bridal Veil park. Ran up the canyon 2 miles to warm-up. Ran 3 miles tempo down @ 6:11, 6:12, 6:11. Then 10 min slower run back up to Bridal Veil park. Ended with 3 x 1 mile with 1 min standing rest @ 6:01, 6:05, 6:04. All the fast miles were going down the canyon. I liked this workout once the three miles tempo was over.

17 miles with Melanie and Melody along Jordan River parkway. The plan was a progression run. The first half was fine, but I just couldn't speed up on the second half. I was unusually tired. I think it was the build-up of so many fast runs over the last three weeks. I also didn't sleep enough and ate too many sweets this week. Avg 7:03 pace.

When I got home I went straight to the shower and almost fell over twice because I felt so exhausted. I went to the ward Christmas breakfast for 1 hour. Then I came home and went straight back to bed for 2 1/2 hours.

10 miles with Melanie, Melody and Emily in Lehi.  Fresh snow on the ground slowed us down so that was good.  I didn't want to go any faster.  avg 7:03 pace.  I took a 2 hour nap in the afternoon and still went to bed at my usual time.  Still catching up on sleep.

10 miles with 7 x 800 m intervals at OHS track with Melanie and Melody.  800 times: 2:57, 2:59, 2:57, 2:59, 2:57, 2:59 and 2:57.  I was consistently inconsistent.  My times were only a couple of seconds slower than they usually are, but I felt more tired than usual.  I think I'll feel better by Saturday, and we're still planning on going easy that day.

4 miles slow.  Didn't take my watch and I'm not just saying it was slow, I'm sure it really was slow, even stopped and walked for a minute or so as I sent a text during the run, etc.

14 miles in the snow.  Headed up Provo Canyon from my house with Melody, Melanie and Kim.  We got 2 miles up the canyon when we turned around because the snow was getting deeper.  Ran down Univ Ave about 4 miles south of the canyon and back to my house for 14 miles.  This run would have been miserable without good company.  Melanie especially hated the snow.

My husband asked me if I would be able to repair a pair of his church pants.  The stitching came undone on the side by his pocket.  I looked at them and said, "Ya.  Just put them somewhere where I'll see them."  He said, "On your running shoes?"

10 miles with Melody and Melanie in Lehi with 15 x 30 sec fast / 90 sec slow. I made it through the workout just fine then Melanie was determined to get our average under 7 min pace and I wished I had a gu for the "cool down." avg 6:53 pace I think.

10 miles with Melanie, our Smith's route from Melanie's house in Lehi.  When I went to bed the night before it was 17 degrees.  In my prayer I said, "It would be nice if it could warm up 5 degrees or so in the night."  Then as I got in bed I thought, "What if I wake up and it's only 12 degrees outside?  I don't know what I'll do."  I almost started laughing when I looked at my clock/thermometer in the morning and it was 12!  I put on double layers and headed out the door.  Avg 6:52 pace.

4 miles on my treadmill while my kids played in the basement.  I so didn't want to do it, but somehow forced myself to anyway.

14 miles with Melanie, Melody and Kim from Kim's house.  About 3 1/2 miles into the run I was so tired I actually wondered if I needed to turn around.  The first 4 miles or so were mostly uphill.  Then we hit alittle downhill and that helped.  At mile 7 I got a big drink and felt a little better.  At mile 8 I took the one gu I had and a mile or so later it kicked in.  The last four miles weren't too bad.  Avg 7:00 pace.

10 miles on my treadmill.  It was in the teens and the roads were covered in snow.  Warm-up 2 miles @ 7:30 pace, 3 miles @ 6:15 pace, 1 mile 7:30 pace, 3 x 1 mile with one minute rest 6:11 pace for first one and 1/2 @ 6:11 pace then 1/2 @ 6:00 pace for the last 2, 1 mile cool-down @ 7:30 pace.  I turned my son's i-pod on with some speakers down in my basement and it wasn't too bad.  Took a couple of shot blocks too.

14 miles in about 14 degrees.  I didn't feel bad physically, but this run was hard mentally.  I was so bored and simply hated running this day.  The roads were bad so we had to run single file most of the way, little to no conversation even with four of us, me, Melody, Melanie and Kim.  We stopped inside the Wilkinson Center at BYU for a drink and I wanted to be done.  Then I realized we had only gone 7 miles, less than the usual Tues/Thurs 10, and I wasn't even tired.  I was just sick of it!

10 miles with Melanie and Melody.  We ran from my house 2 1/2 miles to the Mall/Costco and ran 18 x 30 sec fast / 90 sec slow while going around the Mall/Costco parking lot 3 times.  It was about a 1.5 mile loop.  Ran back home for a cool-down.  The temperatutre was in the teens again and there was a powdery fake looking layer of snow on the ground.  I felt like I might fall down if I tried to take a turn fast.  Our average was much slower than it usually is on a workout like this. I don't think my 30 sec fast was very fast.
